My name is Eugenia Ermacora, originally from Gualeguaychú, Entre Rios, Argentina, I’ve called Los Angeles home for over a decade. My passion for ocean conservation began during childhood summers on the coasts of Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil, where I developed a deep love for nature and the ocean.

My journey into ocean conservation deepened when I became a diver and experienced the underwater world firsthand. Personal experiences led me to learn more about the intricate connections between human activities and the environment. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I pursued my passion by studying sustainability at UCLA and Santa Monica College.
I have been actively involved with the Surfrider Foundation Los Angeles for over six years, first as a volunteer and now as the Los Angeles Chapter Manager. Through Surfrider, I work on addressing critical issues such as plastic pollution reduction, water quality, climate change, ocean protection, and ocean access. Living in Los Angeles is a privilege, and I am dedicated to protecting the ocean and inspiring others to join the cause.
How do microplastics affect human and marine life and ecosystems. Why is it crucial to address microplastics pollution alongside larger plastic debris?
Microplastics pose a significant threat to both human and marine life. They can be ingested by marine organisms, leading to physical harm and even death. When humans consume seafood, these microplastics can enter our bodies, potentially causing health issues. Addressing microplastic pollution is crucial because it highlights the pervasive nature of plastic pollution, affecting even the smallest components of our ecosystems. While larger plastic debris is more visible, microplastics are insidious and can have far-reaching impacts on the environment and human health.

What have been some surprising discoveries?
Yes, I was indeed surprised to learn that microplastics are present in everyday items like water, clothing, fibers, food, and personal care products. This knowledge has profoundly changed my perspective on plastic use, making me more conscious of my choices and the materials I use daily. It underscores the need for greater awareness and systemic change to reduce our reliance on plastics.
What innovative solutions are being made?

Surfrider is committed to addressing plastic pollution through practical and impactful solutions. This includes advocating for policies to reduce single-use plastics, promoting the development of biodegradable materials, and supporting cleanup efforts. By encouraging circular economy practices, we aim to significantly reduce the amount of plastic waste entering our oceans.
Why is Education and Awareness so important?
Education and awareness are at the heart of Surfrider’s mission. We believe that informed individuals can drive change. Our programs focus on educating the public about the sources and impacts of microplastics and empowering people to make sustainable choices. Through community outreach, we encourage actions such as reducing plastic use, supporting policies that limit plastic production, and participating in beach cleanups. These collective efforts help to mitigate the impact of plastic pollution on our marine environments.
To anyone looking to get involved in marine conservation, my advice is to start locally. Volunteer with organizations like Surfrider Los Angeles, participate in beach cleanups and educate yourself and others about the issues facing our oceans. My greatest source of inspiration has been the passionate community of volunteers and activists I’ve met through Surfrider LA. Their dedication and commitment to protecting our oceans motivate me every day.
